The Music Business and Entertainment Industries’
program in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami offers advanced
studies in the business side of music. Founded in 1964, the comprehensive
program currently focuses on intellectual property rights administration which
includes publishing, licensing, royalties and A&R administration.
Music, business and music business courses are combined in a curriculum design
that prepares graduates for many careers in the music and entertainment industries.
Courses are taken in the School of Music and the School of Business. Graduates
work in record companies, music publishing companies, talent agencies, etc.
Each year several graduates enter law school to prepare for careers as entertainment
industry attorneys.
Undergraduate students have an opportunity
to gain hands-on experience through ‘Cane Records, an independent student-run
commercial record label. ‘Cane Records features a variety of music from Brahms to Hip-Hop and has produced
more than twelve albums. The label is challenged to be profitable.

Students in the graduate program run Cat 5,
an independent student-run commercial music publishing company. Staffed by
individuals in the “sweet spot” of the 18-30 year old demographic, Cat 5 was
established in 2002 with the goal of showcasing this young, creative talent
nationwide. Cat 5 licenses music for recordings, professional films and TV.
An industry internship provides additional hands-on experience. The program
is further complimented with guest speakers.
Interaction between the students is fostered and serves as a foundation for
the development of networking skills that are so important in the music business.
By applying these interpersonal skills with fellow students, networking begins
while in school.
Welcome to the music business!
